Oakham U14 (7) vs (26) Stamford U14

Saturday 15th September - Wilson Fields

On Saturday the under 14 A rugby team took part in a closely fought match with Stamford. After a big win against Uppingham last week, all of the players knew that this week would be different. This was a very strong Stamford side who had beaten Oakham with ease for the past two years. Stamford started strongly but so too Oakham with some fantastic last ditch defending on their own line. It couldn’t last and soon the Oakham defence was unlocked. Stamford scored under the posts and then added the conversion to make the score 7-0. This motivated the Oakham team, and before long, Oakham equalised after Toby Cousins scored under the posts. The conversion was added and the scores were tied. After a series of scrums in the middle of the pitch (and on the stoke of half time) a late try left Stamford leading 12-7 at half time. Oakham were resilient in defence at the beginning of the second half but the persistent Stamford pack just kept coming and after some brave defending Stamford scored their third and added the conversion to leave the score at 19-7. More of the same followed as Stamford were now asserting their dominance and another try all but sealed the victory. A late flourish from Oakham saw them come very close to scoring in the corner but Stamford’s defence was strong and they held on to win 26-7. Although the score line doesn’t reflect it, the Oakham under 14 A team put in a very resilient performance but there was definitely places to improve and we will now put our focus to Thursday’s game against Rugby.
