Oakham’s first team sailors emerged victorious at the Rutland Trophy Firefly sailing competition held at Rutland Water last weekend. Oakham’s second team also finished a respectable third.

The winning team of six consisted of Ollie (Capt) (Form 7) & Tomo (Form 7), Maddy (Form 7) & Matt (Form 5) and Alex (Form 7) & Alex (Form 4).

The contest, which is held annually between Oakham, Uppingham, Stamford and Oundle schools, saw sailors racing in good conditions with a steady Force 3 wind building to Force 4.

Mr Nick Neve, Head of Sailing said, “Both of the Oakham teams were superb and it was their fantastic teamwork that helped secure their results. They showed excellent boat-on-boat tactics, helm control and racing strategy. A big thank you also to my colleagues Caroline Hughes, Helen Martin & Yann Toussaint for their help managing the event.”

Oakham sailors, half of whom work as sailing instructors during the holidays, are now looking forward to racing against the Rutland Youth team this weekend. They will also be facing them again at the RYA National Youth Championships in October.
